Finances are always an issue, but in this current economy, money is on the forefront of everyone's mind. Budgets are being cut across the nation whether in state or city governments or individual homes. Michigan is no different than the rest.

The Grand Rapids Police Department has been forced to cut a portion of their staff. In fact, due to budget cuts almost 25 percent of the force has been eliminated. When 305 officers are forced to handle what 387 officers used to, mistakes in criminal offense investigations could be made. In 2010, the city let go of 35 officers. While the city has maintained the same number of patrol officers, the number of detectives has been reduced.

The Grand Rapids Police Department chief has said that something must be done to find a solution to the staffing problems. The state Attorney General recently proposed using $140 million of the state's budget to help increase the number of officers in the state by 1,000 for a period of two years. While the Grand Rapids chief said a more long-term solution is necessary, he stated his support for the proposal as a short-term solution.

If you have been charged with a crime or you believe that you could or have become the subject of an investigation, it is important that you seek the assistance of an experienced attorney who will devote their time and resources to your case. Having a devoted representative fighting for your interests is the best way to ensure that your rights are protected every step of the way, regardless of budgetary funding.
